Oscar Nominee Karla Sofía Gascón Issues Apology, Deactivates X Account After Controversial Tweets Resurface

Created: JANUARY 16, 2025

Karla Sofía Gascón, the first openly transgender actor nominated for an Oscar, has apologized and deactivated her X account following the resurfacing of several controversial tweets. Gascón, nominated for Best Actress for her role in "Emilia Pérez," faced significant backlash for past social media posts concerning Islam and George Floyd.

Variety magazine translated one 2020 post from Spanish, in which Gascón shared an image of a Muslim family dining, accompanied by a disparaging caption. Other resurfaced posts from 2020 and 2021 revealed further criticisms of Islam and other religions, including Christianity and Catholicism.

In a 2020 post following George Floyd's death, Gascón expressed controversial views, referring to Floyd as a "drug addict swindler" while also condemning those who viewed Black people as having no rights and police officers as assassins.

Gascón also previously criticized the Oscars in 2021, describing the ceremony as a platform for "independent and protest films" and making disparaging remarks about its perceived focus on social justice issues.

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Gascón explained her decision to leave X, citing a "campaign of hate and misinformation" and concerns for her family's well-being. She also mentioned receiving death threats, insults, and harassment. A separate statement provided by Netflix acknowledged the hurt caused by her past posts and offered an apology. Gascón emphasized her lifelong commitment to a better world and her belief in the ultimate triumph of good over evil.
