Created: JANUARY 21, 2025

Hungarian authorities have apprehended a 45-year-old Norwegian citizen suspected of plotting an extremist attack mirroring the tragic 2011 Norway massacre that claimed 77 lives. The National Investigation Office of the Hungarian police revealed that the suspect had disseminated numerous online videos detailing his planned attacks.

Following a thorough analysis of these videos and subsequent identification of the suspect, Hungary’s Counter Terrorism Center executed the arrest on June 14th within a Budapest apartment, seizing the individual's electronic devices. The videos, recorded in Norwegian and English, feature the suspect issuing threats targeting airports, railway stations, and airplanes. In one disturbing video, the suspect declares, "I will destroy the innocent."

The suspect explicitly expressed his intention to exceed the atrocities committed by Anders Behring Breivik, the perpetrator of the 2011 Norway attacks. Norwegian authorities have confirmed the suspect's prior convictions for violent and sexual offenses in Norway. The individual is currently held at Hungary’s Forensic Psychiatric and Mental Institution pending further investigation.

The Norwegian National Criminal Investigation Service acknowledged being contacted by Hungarian police but declined to comment further on an ongoing investigation in another country.
