New Orleans Terror Attack: FBI Uncovers Suspect's Internet Searches and Trip Details

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Newly released information from the FBI sheds light on the New Orleans terrorist attack suspect, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, including details about his internet search history and travels. The FBI's investigation reveals that Jabbar's online activity focused on Bourbon Street balcony access, Mardi Gras information, and past shootings in New Orleans as recently as mid-November. Disturbingly, just hours before the Bourbon Street attack, he researched the Christmas market vehicle attack in Germany.

Investigators have also discovered that Jabbar traveled from Houston to New Orleans by train on November 10th, returning to Texas later that day by bus. During his time in New Orleans, he explored an apartment for rent on Orleans Street, even applying for it a few days later before ultimately changing his mind. Furthermore, Jabbar used Meta smart glasses to capture video footage of the French Quarter while cycling through the area months before the attack.

The FBI's timeline of Jabbar's movements also includes trips to Cairo, Egypt, from June 22nd to July 3rd, 2023, and Ontario, Canada, starting on July 10th, 2023, returning to the U.S. a few days later. Evidence suggests that Jabbar's religious devotion intensified in 2022, with a shift towards extremist ideologies beginning in the spring of 2024. FBI Director Christopher Wray has stated that Jabbar appears to have been radicalized online, motivated by ISIS to inflict harm on innocent people.

The number of individuals injured in the attack has been revised to 57, up from the previously reported 35. Authorities have identified a total of 136 victims, including two damaged businesses. The attack, which occurred around 3:15 a.m. on January 1st, involved Jabbar driving a rented Ford F-150 into a New Year's Eve crowd on Bourbon Street, resulting in 14 fatalities. He subsequently engaged in a shootout with police, leading to his death.
