Tensions flared online between X owner Elon Musk and former MSNBC anchor Keith Olbermann just hours before a potential partial government shutdown, as President Biden remained publicly silent on the matter. The online feud erupted following Musk's involvement in the collapse of an initial bipartisan spending bill aimed at averting the shutdown.
Olbermann initiated the exchange with a strongly worded post on X, labeling Musk a "fascist." Musk retorted by referencing Olbermann's neurological condition. The former anchor's post seemed to reflect widespread liberal criticism of Musk's role in derailing the initial spending bill, a 1,547-page document intended as a short-term solution to maintain government funding.

Musk, along with other conservatives, voiced concerns about numerous provisions in the bill they considered extraneous to a straightforward extension of government funding. He publicly urged voters to oust any members of Congress who supported the bill. Following Musk's statement, the Trump transition team, including Vice President-elect JD Vance, issued a joint statement opposing the initial version of the spending deal.

The strong opposition from these influential figures led to the breakdown of negotiations on the initial bill, forcing lawmakers to scramble for a new agreement before the impending shutdown deadline. Liberal politicians and commentators subsequently criticized Musk for his perceived interference in the legislative process, accusing the GOP of allowing unelected individuals to exert undue influence. Other prominent conservatives, including actor Matthew Marsden and comedian Chrissie Mayr, joined the online fray, criticizing Olbermann for his stance and continued presence on X.
