Quick-thinking residents of a Los Angeles neighborhood sprang into action Monday afternoon, chasing down and detaining a man suspected of igniting a fire near the Chatsworth Reservoir. This courageous act comes as the region remains on high alert following recent devastating wildfires.
41-year-old Alejandro Martinez now faces arson charges, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Dramatic video footage captured by journalist Gabe Cortez and shared on Instagram shows Martinez fleeing down a residential street, pursued by several vehicles. The residents then bravely tackled and apprehended him.

One resident can be heard exclaiming, "Wrong neighborhood, buddy! Wrong neighborhood!" as Martinez is subdued.

Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene around 4:30 p.m. to find Martinez being held by the group. A search revealed a lighter, a small amount of cash, and a car battery jumper kit in his possession. Images show officers confiscating these items.

Martinez was heard protesting his innocence in Spanish, claiming he hadn't stolen anything.
Photographer Brandon Taylor of Traffic News LA, who was in the area documenting a nearby brush fire, noted Martinez's presence near the scene, describing it as "a little strange." Taylor’s observation of Martinez in the brush prompted the concerned citizens to pursue and detain him.

The incident resonates deeply with the community, still reeling from the devastating impact of recent wildfires, particularly the Woolsey Fire. Taylor recounted the residents' fury, highlighting their fear of another fire and the potential loss of their homes. They remain vigilant due to the dry vegetation in the area.
Authorities are encouraging anyone with information about the incident to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Chatsworth is located approximately 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.
