Republican Attorneys General: The Front Line of Freedom in the Trump Era

Created: JANUARY 14, 2025

Under President Trump's second term, Republican Attorneys General (AGs) are stepping into a crucial role as defenders of freedom, according to Adam Piper, incoming executive director of the Republican Attorneys General Association (RAGA). Piper argues that Democrats, disheartened by their congressional losses, are increasingly relying on left-leaning state attorneys to obstruct the White House's America First policies.

Piper emphasized the unique position of the 29 Republican AGs, describing them as the "tip of the spear" in safeguarding freedom. He highlighted their dedication to ensuring the safety and security of their states, while also actively supporting President Trump's vision for a free and fair system of government, reflecting the will of the American people.

Piper contrasted this with the actions of Democratic AGs, who have filed numerous lawsuits against the Trump administration within the first few weeks of his second term, particularly targeting the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). A prominent example includes a suit led by New York Attorney General Letitia James, contesting DOGE leader Elon Musk's access to Treasury records, which resulted in a preliminary injunction.

Further legal challenges from Democratic AGs and labor unions have targeted Trump's deferred resignation program for federal workers. In response, Montana's Republican AG, Austin Knudsen, spearheaded a multi-state effort supporting the administration's authority to manage the federal workforce. This legal back-and-forth highlights the escalating tension between the two parties at the state level.

Piper drew a comparison to the Biden administration, where Republican AGs acted as a defensive bulwark. Now, he asserts, they must adopt a more proactive stance, working alongside the Trump administration to advance the DOGE regulatory reform agenda and restore what he terms "America's Golden Age." He anticipates continued opposition from Democratic AGs, particularly in states like New York and California, requiring Republican AGs to defend the rule of law and support President Trump's policies.

Piper criticized AG James' actions as politically motivated, aiming to obstruct the Trump administration's efforts to improve government efficiency and eliminate waste. He underscored the vital role of Republican AGs in countering these efforts and championing policies that benefit the American people. Piper views state attorneys general as highly influential elected officials, capable of effectively pushing back against what he calls "lawfare" tactics employed by their Democratic counterparts.

The RAGA has a history of its members ascending to federal positions within the Department of Justice, including recently appointed U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi. Piper expressed hope for further appointments of RAGA alumni to key positions within the DOJ. He views the organization as a training ground for conservative legal professionals committed to serving the American people.

Looking ahead, the RAGA is focused on supporting Virginia Attorney General Jason Myares in his upcoming reelection campaign, a race considered crucial for maintaining Republican influence at the state level. Piper emphasized the importance of voter turnout and educating Virginians about the significant role of the attorney general in ensuring public safety.
