IRS Whistleblowers Allege Interference in Hunter Biden Tax Probe

Created: JANUARY 22, 2025

Congressional testimony released Thursday reveals allegations of significant interference by the Department of Justice, FBI, and IRS in the Hunter Biden tax evasion investigation. Two IRS whistleblowers claim a pattern of misconduct and preferential treatment aimed at protecting the president's son.

According to House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith, the whistleblowers' accounts detail unequal application of tax law, Justice Department obstruction, and retaliation against IRS agents who exposed the alleged wrongdoing. The testimony describes delays, leaks of information, and outright denials of investigative steps in the Hunter Biden case.

One of the whistleblowers, IRS Criminal Supervisory Special Agent Gary Shapley Jr., asserted that political considerations appeared to influence decisions throughout the investigation. He cited instances of deliberately slow-walking investigative procedures, blocking enforcement actions, restricting questioning of witnesses, and misrepresenting charging authority. Shapley also highlighted delays implemented just before elections to prevent the investigation from becoming public.

A key piece of evidence, according to Shapley, was a 2017 WhatsApp message from Hunter Biden to a Chinese business associate. In the message, Biden allegedly invoked his father's presence and threatened repercussions if a certain commitment wasn't met. Shapley testified that this message indicated the need to search the Biden family's Delaware guest house where Hunter Biden resided, but the request was denied. Assistant U.S. Attorney Lesley Wolf reportedly cited "optics" as a reason to block the search warrant.

This revelation comes shortly after the Justice Department announced Hunter Biden's plea deal on two misdemeanor tax charges and a pretrial diversion agreement for a firearm possession charge. This agreement is anticipated to allow him to avoid prison time.

The Justice Department responded to the committee's release by reiterating U.S. Attorney David Weiss's full authority over the case and directing any inquiries to his office.
