ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit has voiced his opinion that players involved in the multiple on-field brawls over the weekend should face stronger disciplinary action. Several post-game fights erupted, sparked by attempts to plant flags on opposing teams' fields, as well as a pitchfork incident during the Arizona State-Arizona game.
While the Big Ten Conference fined Michigan and Ohio State $100,000 each following their altercation, Herbstreit believes suspensions are warranted for the aggressors in these incidents. He took to X to express his view, stating that conference commissioners should review the game footage and suspend any players who escalated the situations, regardless of whether their next game is a bowl game or a playoff game. Herbstreit emphasized the need for consequences to curb such behavior.
Among the teams involved in these flag-planting disputes were North Carolina and NC State, and Florida and Florida State. Currently, only the Big Ten has imposed disciplinary measures.
Potential suspensions could impact upcoming bowl games for the universities involved. Arizona and Florida State are currently ineligible for postseason play, lacking the required six wins.
