A Florida man has been charged with child abuse after allegedly urging his 13-year-old daughter to take her own life. Gared Wayne Canales, 33, reportedly told his daughter over speakerphone that she was "worthless" and a "whore," encouraging her to commit suicide. The incident occurred in April while the teenager was with friends in her room. Canales also reportedly stated his preference for his girlfriend over his daughter and instructed her to "go kill yourself." He further added, "You kill yourself, just don't say it." The verbal abuse allegedly led the girl to destroy a picture of herself and her father with a baseball bat.

Two days after this incident, the young girl reportedly attempted suicide by cutting her wrist and ingesting a large number of Benadryl pills. Her mother rushed her to a hospital in Daytona Beach, where she received treatment. Prior to the suicide attempt, the girl had texted her father expressing suicidal thoughts.
Following the incident, an arrest warrant was issued for Canales, who was located in Massachusetts and extradited back to Florida. He currently faces charges of felony child abuse and misdemeanor violation of probation and is being held without bond in the Flagler County Jail. A restraining order preventing Canales from contacting his daughter has been issued. Canales' cousin is currently serving a life sentence for the attempted murder of his girlfriend and child's mother in 2014.
