Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey is grappling with a surge of drone-related incidents, primarily involving attempts to smuggle illicit goods into the FCI Fort Dix prison located on the base. A base spokesperson confirmed to Fox News Digital that multiple drone incursions have been detected this year, each aimed at breaching the prison's security. The most recent interception occurred on September 15, 2024.
The base has implemented measures to counter these unauthorized drone activities, including detection and response protocols, and emphasized the existing flight restrictions in place. They are actively collaborating with local law enforcement to address the security concerns and ensure the safety of the installation. Past incidents have involved drones carrying contraband such as cell phones and accessories, drugs, tobacco, weight loss supplements, and other prohibited items, according to reports.
These incidents coincide with a broader wave of drone sightings across New Jersey in recent weeks, causing confusion among residents and prompting investigations. While the Biden administration has downplayed the threat to public safety and ruled out foreign interference, the Pentagon suggests the drones are likely operated by hobbyists for recreational purposes. However, Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder acknowledged the possibility of malicious intent, stating that drone flights near military installations are taken seriously, although not uncommon.
