Denver Shooting After Nuggets Championship Win Likely Linked to Drug Deal

Created: JANUARY 18, 2025

Following the Denver Nuggets' historic NBA championship win, celebrations took a dark turn when a shooting incident in downtown Denver left ten people injured. Authorities now believe the violence, which occurred roughly a mile from Ball Arena, stemmed from a drug deal gone wrong.

Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas confirmed that while one of the two suspected shooters was among the injured, all ten individuals are expected to recover. Among the victims, five or six are thought to be bystanders who were not involved in the alleged drug transaction. Approximately 20 rounds were fired during the incident, according to Chief Thomas.

Police spokesperson Doug Schepman noted that the shooting took place in the vicinity of the main post-game celebrations, but the crowd had significantly thinned by the time of the incident around 12:30 a.m., roughly 3 1/2 hours after the Nuggets' victory over the Miami Heat.

Livestreamer Scott D’Angelo captured the chaos as the shots rang out, sending people scrambling for cover. The 58-year-old recounted the pandemonium, describing how people dove for safety and jumped over barricades amidst the sound of rapid gunfire. He also witnessed police officers in riot gear taking cover and drawing their weapons while urging people to seek shelter. D’Angelo described feeling his arms shaking and experiencing the onset of an asthma attack as he hid.

D'Angelo's footage, which he has shared with law enforcement, reportedly captured the sounds of a woman screaming in pain nearby, as well as the sight of another victim lying close by. After the gunfire ceased, which D’Angelo estimated lasted about 20 seconds based on his recording, he witnessed the arrival of ambulances and observed a substantial trail of blood from one of the victims. He also noted the presence of bullet casings just feet from where he had taken cover.

The shooting unfolded in Denver's LoDo district, a popular area known for its vibrant nightlife and dining scene. The area remained cordoned off by police tape overnight as investigators processed the scene, which was marked with evidence markers and remnants of the earlier celebrations.

Reflecting on the incident, D’Angelo expressed feeling numb and overwhelmed by the senseless violence, emphasizing the emotional impact of witnessing such an event and the indiscriminate nature of the shooting, which injured innocent bystanders.
