Prominent Democratic senators and activist organizations are pressing the Biden administration to complete the discharge of student loan debt for borrowers affected by predatory for-profit colleges, despite a legal injunction halting the process. Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Ed Markey (D-MA) recently held a press conference in Washington D.C. with several activist groups, advocating for the Department of Education to fulfill its commitment to these borrowers.
Senator Durbin emphasized the urgency of the situation, calling on the administration to act swiftly in its remaining weeks. The Biden administration previously announced plans to forgive loans for over half a million borrowers from Corinthian Colleges Inc. and over 200,000 from ITT Technical Institute. However, a significant number of eligible Corinthian students are still awaiting relief, according to the Project on Predatory Student Lending (PPSL).
PPSL has stated its focus on ensuring all promised relief is delivered and that further group discharges are issued for those impacted by predatory institutions. The organization's senior director has expressed a strong desire for the Biden administration to complete its initiated work. The senators and PPSL are scheduled to hold further events to amplify their call for action.
This push comes despite an ongoing legal challenge to the "borrower defense loan discharge program," which has resulted in a court-ordered injunction preventing the program's implementation until the case is resolved. The Department of Education acknowledges the injunction's validity but encourages borrowers to continue applying for relief, stating that applications will be processed as the legal proceedings continue.
The Department of Education declined to provide official comment, and Senator Durbin, Senator Markey, and PPSL did not respond to requests for comment from Fox News Digital.
