Following the discovery of cocaine in a highly frequented area of the White House West Wing, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer has formally requested a briefing from Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle. Comer's letter criticizes the security breach and demands more information about the incident, which prompted an evacuation of the building. He expressed concern over the security protocols at the White House and stressed the need to understand how such a substance could be found in such a sensitive location.

Comer called the incident "unacceptable" and "a shameful moment" in White House history. He has set a deadline of July 14, 2023, for the Secret Service to provide a staff-level briefing to the committee. Initial reports placed the cocaine in the White House library, but later information indicated it was found near the West Executive entrance, a more secure area. Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed the location was a heavily trafficked area accessible to many visitors.

The Secret Service is actively investigating the incident, which occurred while President Biden and his family were at Camp David. The discovery has drawn criticism from Republicans, some of whom have linked the incident to Hunter Biden's past struggles with addiction, although there is no evidence to support such claims. Senator Tom Cotton also sent a letter to the Secret Service demanding a detailed explanation of the security lapse and a plan to address any vulnerabilities.
