Chiefs' Playoff Experience: Advantage or Not Against Bills?

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

The Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills are set for another high-stakes showdown in the AFC Championship, marking their fourth meeting in recent years. Chiefs coach Andy Reid addressed the question of whether Kansas City's extensive playoff experience gives them an edge over Buffalo.

Reid acknowledged the potential benefit of having players accustomed to the pressure of playoff football. "It normally doesn’t hurt," he remarked, while also emphasizing the familiarity between the two teams. "We play these guys all the time. They know us, we know them… I’m glad we have all those guys, and you’ll need all of them." The Bills handed the Chiefs one of their two regular season losses in Week 11, winning 30-21 in Buffalo. This time, the AFC Championship will be played in Kansas City.

While the Bills hold a 4-3 record against the Chiefs in their last seven encounters, all three losses have occurred in the playoffs. Last season, the Chiefs triumphed over the Bills in the AFC Divisional Round in Buffalo. Two years prior, the Chiefs defeated the Bills in a memorable overtime thriller in the Divisional Round and also bested them in the AFC Championship game the previous season.

Securing the No. 1 seed in the AFC, Kansas City enjoyed a first-round bye and a seemingly less demanding playoff journey compared to Buffalo. The Chiefs advanced to the AFC Championship with a 24-13 victory over the Houston Texans, while the Bills had to navigate two playoff games, defeating the Denver Broncos and then edging out the Baltimore Ravens.

The upcoming AFC Championship game will determine whether the Chiefs' playoff experience proves to be a decisive factor against a formidable Bills team. The game is scheduled for Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET.
