The Dallas Cowboys have appointed Brian Schottenheimer as their new head coach, stepping up from his role as offensive coordinator. This move comes after the team parted ways with Mike McCarthy following a disappointing 7-10 season.
Schottenheimer's promotion might surprise some, given the team's offensive struggles in 2024. However, his first year as OC in 2023 saw the Cowboys boast the league's fifth-ranked offense and win the NFC East, coinciding with a stellar season from quarterback Dak Prescott. This success, coupled with Schottenheimer's extensive experience, appears to have swayed Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.
The appointment comes after the Cowboys missed the opportunity to interview other potential candidates earlier in the offseason. Schottenheimer, the son of renowned NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer, brings almost three decades of coaching experience to the role, having previously served as offensive coordinator for the Jets, Rams, and Seahawks.
While Prescott's season-ending injury in 2024 undoubtedly impacted the team's performance, Jones clearly believes in Schottenheimer's ability to lead the Cowboys back to success. This decision bypassed other potential candidates like Deion Sanders and Jason Witten. The 51-year-old Schottenheimer now faces the challenge of revitalizing the Cowboys' offense and proving Jerry Jones' faith in him is well-placed.
