Miami Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward etched his name in the NCAA record books on Saturday, setting a new Division I mark for career touchdown passes during the Pop-Tarts Bowl against Iowa State. His record-breaking 156th touchdown pass came in the first quarter, connecting with receiver Jacolby George. However, Ward's historic achievement was overshadowed by a surprising turn of events as he was benched for the second half, with backup Emory Williams taking over. Miami ultimately lost a close contest to Iowa State, 42-41.
Following the game, Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal declined to elaborate on the decision to bench Ward, stating that such discussions remain internal. Cristobal did, however, acknowledge Ward's strong performance while he was in the game. The move sparked considerable discussion on social media.
Ward's record surpasses the previous mark held by former Houston Cougars quarterback Case Keenum, who threw 155 touchdown passes between 2007 and 2011. Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel, with 153 career touchdown passes, is also within striking distance of the record and could potentially break it during the College Football Playoffs.
Reflecting on his accomplishment, Ward expressed gratitude and highlighted his personal growth during his time with the Hurricanes. He described the team as the best he's ever been a part of. Meanwhile, Cristobal praised Ward's character and the positive influence he's had on the Miami program.
Ward is projected to be a high pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, alongside other top quarterback prospects like Shedeur Sanders, Quinn Ewers, and Carson Beck.
