California Wildfires Devastate Historic Will Rogers Ranch and Topanga State Park

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Raging wildfires in Los Angeles have caused widespread destruction, including the loss of the historic home of Hollywood legend Will Rogers and significant damage to Topanga State Park, according to California State Parks.

The Will Rogers State Historic Park (WRSHP), where the iconic actor resided in the 1930s, saw the destruction of his home overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Before-and-after images released by the state starkly illustrate the devastation, with only the fireplaces remaining standing. While the structure was lost, state officials confirmed the successful evacuation of horses and some historical artifacts, including artwork, before the fire consumed the ranch.

The fire also ravaged Topanga State Park, obliterating the Topanga Ranch Motel and concession stands. Tragically, park employees also lost their homes in the blaze. Over 30 structures across both state parks were destroyed. State Parks Director Armando Quintero expressed the agency's sorrow over the loss of these valuable natural and cultural resources and extended sympathies to those affected by the fires.

State Parks personnel are actively working to salvage remaining artifacts and assess the full extent of the damage. Quintero emphasized the ongoing emergency response efforts, assuring that all available resources are being deployed to secure and protect affected state parks. He expressed gratitude for the rapid response of park staff and partner agencies and reiterated the primary focus on public and responder safety. As of Wednesday afternoon, six wildfires continued to burn across Los Angeles County, including in Pacific Palisades, Sylmar, and near Pasadena. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna reported five fatalities in the Eaton Fire.
