Bengals Expected to Franchise Tag Tee Higgins Again, Aiming for Long-Term Deal

The Cincinnati Bengals are anticipated to use the franchise tag on wide receiver Tee Higgins for the second year in a row, according to reports from SI.com. This move, however, isn't indicative of a desire to let Higgins walk; rather, it's a strategic maneuver to buy time while working towards a long-term contract extension.

The Bengals reportedly plan to utilize the non-exclusive franchise tag, meaning that while they retain Higgins' rights, other teams can negotiate with him. Should Higgins sign an offer sheet with another team, the Bengals would have the right to match. If they decline, they would receive two first-round draft picks as compensation.

This move underscores Cincinnati's commitment to keeping Higgins as a key component of their offense, despite the potential for him to become a highly sought-after free agent this offseason. While last year's franchise tag situation created some tension as Higgins desired a long-term commitment, the Bengals are clearly demonstrating their intent to retain him.

Key figures within the Bengals organization, including quarterback Joe Burrow and fellow receiver Ja'Marr Chase, have publicly voiced their support for Higgins and their hope for a long-term agreement. Burrow emphasized Higgins' value to the team, highlighting his work ethic and contributions.

In the 2024 season, Higgins recorded 73 receptions for 911 yards and 10 touchdowns, showcasing his continued importance to the Bengals' passing attack. Over his five seasons with the team, he has amassed impressive totals of 330 catches, 4,595 receiving yards, and 34 touchdowns.

Should Higgins play under the franchise tag in 2025, he would earn a guaranteed $26.18 million, a figure determined by the average of the top five receiver salaries from the previous season. The Bengals and Higgins have a window from February 18 to March 4 to negotiate a contract before the franchise tag officially takes effect.
