Arab American Group Rebrands Following Trump's Gaza Proposal

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

Following President Trump's controversial suggestion that the United States should "take over" the Gaza Strip, the pro-Trump organization formerly known as Arab Americans for Trump has rebranded itself as Arab Americans for Peace. The group's founder, Bishara Bahbah, expressed concerns to Reuters that the former president's idea, while potentially well-intentioned, caused significant offense. They firmly oppose any relocation of Palestinians from their homeland, regardless of whether it's voluntary or forced.

During a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, President Trump proposed the idea of U.S. control over Gaza, asserting that the U.S. would "own it" and be responsible for removing unexploded ordnance and other weapons. He stressed the need for a new approach in Gaza, where conflict between Hamas and Israel has persisted for over a year, cautioning against repeating past failures.

This proposal has drawn a range of responses, with the newly named Arab Americans for Peace among its critics. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) also criticized the plan, arguing that it doesn't prioritize American interests. Hamas, the militant group controlling Gaza, condemned the suggestion as a "recipe for chaos" and a "crime against humanity."

In contrast, Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed support for Trump's idea on "Hannity," viewing it as a potential catalyst for positive change and suggesting it could offer Gazans the option to relocate and return after rebuilding efforts. This comes as Hamas and Israel observe a ceasefire, which has facilitated the release of some hostages, including an American citizen, with further releases anticipated.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict became a point of contention among Democrats leading up to the 2024 election, influencing protest votes against then-President Biden in Michigan. After Biden withdrew from the race and Kamala Harris became the nominee, the group "Abandon Harris" (formerly "Abandon Biden") endorsed Jill Stein and campaigned against pro-Israel candidates. Numerous anti-Israel demonstrations also took place during the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

The organization, then known as Arab Americans for Trump, played a significant role in Trump's 2024 campaign outreach to Arab Americans, and is credited with contributing to Trump's victory in Dearborn, Michigan, a city with a substantial Arab American population.
