Yankees Update Facial Hair Policy, Allowing Players to Sport Beards

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

The New York Yankees are ushering in a new era, relaxing their decades-old facial hair policy for the 2025 season. Players will now be permitted to have "well-groomed" beards, a significant shift from the clean-shaven look the team has long required.

Hal Steinbrenner speaks

Managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner announced the policy change on social media, explaining that the decision followed extensive discussions with current and former Yankees players. Steinbrenner acknowledged the significance of the change, stating that it was "the appropriate time to move beyond the familiar comfort of our former policy." He emphasized that the change reflects his consideration of various perspectives on the matter.

The stringent facial hair regulations, implemented in the 1970s, dictated that players, coaches, and male executives could only have mustaches, with exceptions made for religious reasons. Hair length was also restricted, with no hair allowed below the collar. Devin Williams side by side

The recent acquisition of All-Star closer Devin Williams, who initially arrived at spring training with his beard, sparked renewed discussion about the policy. Williams later shaved, but the incident highlighted the evolving attitudes towards personal grooming in baseball. The Yankees have a history of players conforming to the team's appearance standards, including notable examples like Gerrit Cole, who shaved his beard and cut his hair upon joining the team. Numerous other players, such as Carlos Rodon, Alex Verdugo, Joey Gallo, Josh Donaldson, Johnny Damon, Jason Giambi, and Paul Goldschmidt, have also adapted their appearance to comply with the Yankees' traditional rules. This policy change marks a visible shift for the Yankees, promising a different look for the team on the field in the upcoming season.
