Wisconsin School Shooter Was in Contact with California Man Plotting Mass Attack

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

A 15-year-old girl who fatally shot a teacher and a student at a private Christian school in Madison, Wisconsin, was reportedly communicating with a California man who was allegedly planning a separate mass shooting, according to the Associated Press.

The shooter, Natalie Rupnow, was in contact with a 20-year-old Carlsbad man who, according to a restraining order, told FBI agents he was planning an attack on a government building using firearms and explosives. The restraining order, issued under California's red flag law, compels the man to surrender his weapons and ammunition. The order doesn't specify the target building or the planned timing of the attack, nor does it detail the nature of his interactions with Rupnow.

The shooting at Abundant Life Christian School occurred just before 11 a.m., resulting in the deaths of 14-year-old student Rubi Patricia Vergara and 42-year-old teacher Erin M. West. Rupnow died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Six others were injured, two critically. The Dane County Medical Examiner confirmed both victims died from firearm-related trauma.

Vergara's obituary described her as a freshman who loved art, reading, and playing keyboard in her family's worship band. Her funeral is scheduled for Saturday in Madison.

Madison police recovered two handguns from the school, although only one was reportedly used in the shooting. Police Chief Shon Barnes stated that determining the motive is a top priority, suggesting it may involve multiple factors. He acknowledged the lasting impact on all those present during the incident and pledged to provide as much information to the public as possible. The source of the firearms and potential charges against Rupnow's parents remain under investigation.

Rupnow's family is cooperating with authorities. Rebekah Smith, whose daughter attends Abundant Life, knew all the victims and their families personally. She noted that West had recently transitioned from a long-term substitute to a full-time teaching role. The school confirmed West's three-year history as a substitute before her recent full-time appointment and Vergara's attendance since kindergarten.
