Pramila Jayapal's controversial statement labeling Israel a "racist state." The White House refrained from explicitly condemning Jayapal by name, despite widespread criticism of the Washington Democrat's remarks.

Jean-Pierre emphasized the strong bond and enduring commitment between the United States and Israel, highlighting the importance of Israel's security and legitimacy. She reiterated President Biden's stance on the special relationship between the two nations, particularly in light of Israel's 75th anniversary of independence. However, she avoided directly addressing Jayapal's controversial statement.

The controversy began over the weekend when Jayapal, chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, made the remark at the Netroots Nation Conference in Chicago. Her comments, in response to pro-Palestinian protestors, drew immediate condemnation, particularly from pro-Israel Republicans. Jayapal later issued a statement walking back her initial remarks and endorsing a two-state solution, while simultaneously criticizing what she called "racist policies" of Netanyahu's government.

National Security Council spokesman John Kirby acknowledged Jayapal's apology. However, when pressed by Heinrich, Jean-Pierre again stopped short of direct condemnation, stating that anti-Jewish hatred and antisemitism are unacceptable. She highlighted the Biden administration's comprehensive plan to combat antisemitism, emphasizing the president's commitment to addressing this issue.
