UPenn Professor Faces Backlash for Apparent Celebration of Slain CEO's Killer's Alma Mater

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

A University of Pennsylvania professor has faced significant criticism and subsequently adjusted her social media presence after appearing to celebrate the alleged killer of UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson's connection to the Ivy League institution. The suspect, 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, was apprehended in Pennsylvania and is facing charges in New York, including second-degree murder.

Following Mangione's arrest, Professor Julia Alekseyeva, known as "The Soviette" online, reportedly posted content on platforms like TikTok expressing pride in her affiliation with UPenn, seemingly referencing Mangione's status as an alumnus. One post included a song from Les Misérables and text that replaced the 'E' in Pennsylvania with the number 3.

These posts garnered attention after being shared on X (formerly Twitter) by accounts like Libs of TikTok and UPenn alumnus Eyal Yakoby, who condemned Alekseyeva's actions. Yakoby also shared alleged screenshots of Alekseyeva's Instagram stories where she reportedly lauded Mangione. Alekseyeva has since made her Instagram private and seemingly deactivated her TikTok account, while her X account remains public.

UPenn released a statement distancing itself from Alekseyeva's comments, labeling them as "antithetical to the values" of the institution. The university stated that Alekseyeva has acknowledged her remarks were inappropriate and has retracted them.

Alekseyeva's actions follow a wave of controversial social media reactions to Thompson's death, with some individuals appearing to celebrate or justify the killing due to grievances with the healthcare system. Another academic, Anthony Zenkus of Columbia University, also faced criticism for a post mourning the deaths of Americans due to healthcare access issues, though he clarified that he was not condoning murder.
