Trump Expands Lawsuit Against CBS News Over Edited Kamala Harris Interview

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

Former President Donald Trump has broadened his legal action against CBS News following the release of the complete transcript and raw footage of a "60 Minutes" interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris. The lawsuit now includes Paramount Global, CBS News' parent company, as a defendant due to the interview's availability on the Paramount+ streaming platform. Texas Representative Ronny Jackson has also joined the lawsuit as a plaintiff, citing harm as a consumer of news media content. The amended complaint integrates excerpts from the unedited transcript to support Trump's claim that CBS News strategically omitted segments to benefit the Democratic nominee.

One example highlighted in the filing involves Harris' response to a question about increased border crossings during the Biden administration. Trump's lawyers characterize her answer as a "word salad," citing her statement about various global factors influencing irregular migration and the need for solution-oriented leaders. Additionally, Trump's legal team has submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for records related to the lawsuit, including those from former FCC chair Jessica Rosenworcel.

The released raw footage revealed discrepancies between how CBS News presented Harris' response to a question about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. A preview clip aired on "Face the Nation" included the first half of her response, while the primetime special only aired the second half. This editing choice drew criticism and accusations of protecting Harris from negative feedback. Current FCC chair Brendan Carr, who ordered the release of the unedited transcript, described CBS News' actions as "hard to explain," contrasting their handling of the Harris interview with the prompt release of a transcript from an interview with Vice President JD Vance.

Trump's lawsuit, initially filed for $10 billion, alleges election interference and accuses CBS News of using deceptive editing to support Harris. The suit claims the network manipulated the interview to influence the 2024 presidential election, which Trump was leading at the time. Paramount Global is reportedly considering settling the lawsuit to avoid potential complications with a planned merger with Skydance Media, as Trump's FCC could potentially impede the transaction.

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr said CBS News' conduct is "hard to explain" following the release of the raw transcript and footage of the network's "60 Minutes" interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris.
