Trump Anticipates Indictment in Jan. 6 Probe, Alleges Political Persecution

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

Former President Donald Trump has announced his expectation of an indictment following a target letter received from Special Counsel Jack Smith regarding the January 6th grand jury investigation. Trump shared the news on Truth Social, claiming the letter, received on Sunday, indicates an impending arrest and indictment. He characterized the investigation as a politically motivated attack orchestrated by President Biden and the Department of Justice, aimed at hindering his presidential campaign.

A government source confirmed to Fox News that Smith's office sent the target letter. Trump's post on Truth Social expressed his belief that this represents a third indictment driven by the Biden administration against him, emphasizing his leading position in the presidential race.

Trump drew parallels to previous investigations, including the Trump-Russia probe and two impeachment trials, asserting his vindication in each instance. He cited the Durham report, which concluded that the FBI's investigation into his campaign's alleged ties to Russia was flawed. He also referenced the investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election, the Steele dossier, and interactions between the FBI and social media platforms. He further suggested a potential fourth indictment could originate from Fulton County, Georgia, related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in the state.

Regarding January 6th, Trump maintained his right to protest the 2020 election results, which he believes were fraudulent. He accused the DOJ and FBI of targeting those who question the election's integrity rather than investigating the alleged fraud itself.

Trump framed these investigations as attempts to stifle his advocacy for the American people and vowed to continue his efforts. He reiterated his long-standing claims of unfair treatment, dating back to his initial presidential campaign announcement. This latest development follows Trump's not-guilty plea to 37 federal charges related to the handling of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago. This marked the first time a former president has faced federal criminal charges.
