Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

A camper in a Connecticut state park was attacked by a bobcat, which later tested positive for rabies. The incident occurred early Friday morning on Selden Neck Island in Selden Neck State Park, Lyme. The camper was part of a group of adults leading young campers. Three adults, including the victim, managed to subdue and kill the bobcat. The animal was then sent to the State Public Health laboratory for testing.

The three adults involved in subduing the bobcat sustained injuries and were transported to a hospital. Fortunately, none of the children in the camping group came into contact with the animal. Following the attack, the Deep River Fire Department and DEEP Environmental Conservation Police evacuated all campers from the island.

Bobcat attacks on humans are uncommon, according to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP). Unprovoked attacks are often linked to disease, such as rabies. While rabies isn't as prevalent in bobcats as in some other mammals, they are susceptible to the virus.

Wildlife officials advise maintaining a safe distance from animals and treating them with respect.
