Suleman Dawood's Final Mission: A Rubik's Cube at the Titanic

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Nineteen-year-old Suleman Dawood, who tragically lost his life aboard the Titan submersible, had a unique goal for his deep-sea expedition: solving a Rubik's Cube at the Titanic wreckage site. This poignant detail was revealed by his mother, Christine Dawood, in a recent interview with the BBC.

Suleman and his father, Shahzada Dawood, had applied to Guinness World Records for the feat and brought a camera to document the attempt. Christine and her daughter remained on the support vessel, the Polar Prince, anxiously awaiting updates. She described the heart-wrenching moment communication with the submersible was lost, saying, "I didn't grasp the implications at first, and then the situation rapidly deteriorated."

Christine shared that she and her husband had originally intended to make the Titanic voyage together, but the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted their plans. Suleman ultimately took his mother's place, fulfilling his strong desire to experience the historic wreck.

Crew of the Titan Submersible

The five individuals aboard the Titan – Suleman and Shahzada Dawood, British billionaire Hamish Harding, French maritime expert Paul-Henry Nargeolet, and OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush – tragically perished in a catastrophic implosion approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes into their descent. Suleman's aunt, Azmeh Dawood, revealed to NBC News that he had expressed apprehension about the expedition but chose to accompany his father for Father's Day weekend.

A massive search and rescue operation, spearheaded by the U.S. Coast Guard, ensued, fueled by the hope that the submersible's occupants might be sustained by the onboard oxygen supply. However, after three agonizing days, a debris field indicative of an implosion was discovered near the Titanic, confirming the tragic loss.
