Schroder Traded After Comparing NBA Trade Deadline to 'Modern Slavery'

Created: JANUARY 17, 2025

In a whirlwind NBA trade deadline move, Dennis Schroder finds himself heading to the Utah Jazz as part of a multi-team deal involving Jimmy Butler's transfer to the Golden State Warriors and also including the Detroit Pistons. This trade follows Schroder's controversial comparison of the NBA trade deadline to "modern slavery" in a recent interview.

Speaking to NBC Sports Bay Area, Schroder expressed his concerns about players' lack of agency during the trade deadline period, despite having contracts. He highlighted the power imbalance between players and organizations, noting that teams can dictate a player's future regardless of their personal preferences. While acknowledging the financial privileges of professional athletes, he emphasized the unsettling reality of being essentially told where to work, despite a supposed emphasis on team-first mentality.

This trade marks the sixth time Schroder has been traded in his NBA career, having previously been moved from the Brooklyn Nets to the Warriors earlier this season. He expressed his hope that the league will address this power dynamic between players and owners in the future.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr also weighed in on the trade deadline frenzy, suggesting that moving it to coincide with the All-Star break could mitigate the emotional and logistical challenges teams face when players are traded shortly before games. Kerr pointed out the difficulty of maintaining focus and team cohesion amidst last-minute roster changes.
