NFL Doubles Down on Gambling Policy Amidst Surge in Suspensions

Created: JANUARY 21, 2025

Following a wave of player suspensions related to gambling, the NFL has reiterated and reinforced its gambling policy. Last year, Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Calvin Ridley received a full-season suspension for betting on NFL games, setting a precedent for subsequent disciplinary actions. This year, four Detroit Lions players faced suspensions of varying lengths for violating league gambling rules.

In a recent media conference call, the NFL emphasized six core rules for players:

  1. No betting on NFL games.
  2. No gambling at team facilities, during travel for away games, or at team hotels.
  3. No allowing others to place bets on your behalf.
  4. No sharing confidential team information.
  5. No entering sportsbooks during the NFL season.
  6. No participating in daily fantasy football.

The league acknowledges the evolving landscape of sports betting and its increased accessibility. Jeff Miller, NFL Executive Vice President of Communications, Public Affairs and Policy, stressed the importance of game integrity and the need for clear communication and education regarding gambling rules. He highlighted the simplicity of the core rules, emphasizing the long-standing prohibitions against betting on the NFL and gambling while on the job.

The NFL's monitoring system now includes alerts for player activity on mobile gaming apps and bets placed from their homes, regardless of who places the wager. Sabrina Perel, NFL Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer, stated that the league continually seeks to improve its monitoring resources and adapt to the evolving gambling landscape.

The recent suspensions include Detroit Lions wide receiver Quintez Cephus and safety C.J. Moore for allegedly betting on NFL games, and wide receivers Stanley Berryhill and Jameson Williams for betting on non-NFL games at a team facility. Washington Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney was also suspended indefinitely for allegedly betting on NFL games, and Indianapolis Colts player Isaiah Rodgers is under investigation for gambling.
