A multi-vehicle collision in Oakland, California, on Saturday, involving two Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) police vehicles, resulted in injuries to several individuals. The Oakland Police Department (OPD) reported the incident, which occurred around 2:45 p.m. local time in the 700 block of Mandela Parkway, near the West Oakland train station.
Images from the scene depicted damaged police cruisers with shattered windows and open doors, alongside debris scattered across the street. Emergency medical personnel arrived on the scene and transported the injured to local hospitals for treatment.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, with authorities yet to determine if alcohol or drugs played a role. The OPD hasn't released information regarding the condition of the BART officers involved. The incident comes amidst ongoing concerns about crime and safety in Oakland. In August, the president of the Oakland Police Officer's Association criticized then-Mayor Sheng Thao (who was later recalled in November) for what he perceived as insufficient action to address crime in the city.

Further controversy arose in July when the Oakland Police Department faced scrutiny for potentially underreporting crime statistics after announcing a 33% drop in crime, a figure then-Mayor Thao had highlighted as a positive development.
