Following a less-than-stellar period with the Carolina Panthers, Matt Rhule is back in the college football arena, now leading the Nebraska Cornhuskers. His time in the NFL ended after a disappointing run of just one win in the first five games of the 2022 season, concluding a three-year tenure that fell short of expectations. Hired in early 2020 with a seven-year contract after achieving success at the college level, Rhule's task was to revitalize the Panthers franchise, but ultimately, it didn't pan out as planned.

Rhule's next chapter began in November when he accepted the head coaching position at Nebraska. He acknowledges the difficulties faced in Carolina, describing the experience as a "purifying fire" that stripped away unnecessary distractions and allowed him to concentrate on what truly matters. In an interview with ESPN, Rhule expressed his determination to apply the lessons learned and create a different outcome at Nebraska, especially for his family, who also experienced the challenges in Carolina.
Rhule concluded his time with the Panthers holding an 11-27 record, including five wins in both 2020 and 2021. The team's offensive struggles were evident, ranking low in explosive plays. The quarterback position also remained a persistent issue, even with the return of veteran Cam Newton late in the 2021 season.

Looking forward, Rhule exudes optimism about Nebraska's potential, believing the program can regain national prominence and become a contender, particularly with the College Football Playoff expansion to 12 teams. Meanwhile, the Panthers moved on, appointing Steve Wilks as interim coach before hiring Frank Reich as the new head coach. A significant trade with the Chicago Bears allowed the Panthers to secure the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft, which they used to select quarterback Bryce Young.
