Mali to Prosecute Authors of UN Report on Human Rights Abuses

Created: JANUARY 21, 2025

Mali's government will pursue legal action against the individuals responsible for a United Nations report that alleges human rights violations by the Malian military and Russian mercenaries. This decision follows a recent demand by Mali's foreign minister for the complete withdrawal of UN peacekeepers from the country.

The UN report, released in May, centered on an incident in Moura in March 2022. Based on witness testimonies, forensic evidence, and satellite imagery, the report indicated potential summary executions, torture, and rape perpetrated by Malian and foreign forces. The report specifically accused the Malian army and the Russian Wagner Group of killing at least 500 civilians during the operation.

Mali's acting Public Prosecutor, Ladji Sara, stated that those involved in the report's creation would face charges related to espionage, undermining military morale, forgery, and compromising national security. This action reflects the interim government's increasing resistance to foreign involvement in the country.

Since Colonel Assimi Goïta's rise to power through coups in 2020, the transitional government has expelled foreign journalists and UN officials, imposed limitations on peacekeeping missions, and fostered closer ties with the Wagner Group. This prosecution represents another step in that direction.
