Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

The New York Liberty punched their ticket to the Commissioner's Cup championship game, overcoming a dramatic late-game surge by the Indiana Fever to win 95-87 in overtime. Sabrina Ionescu led the charge for New York, scoring 34 points, including eight crucial points in the extra period.

The Liberty built a commanding 18-point lead in the fourth quarter, but Indiana refused to go down quietly. Rookie Aliyah Boston drained a game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer, sending the game into overtime. This marked Boston's second successful three-point attempt of the season, capping off a 16-0 run by the Fever. Erica Wheeler's three-point play just seconds before had set the stage for Boston's heroics.

However, New York's experience proved to be the difference-maker in overtime. Ionescu sank two of her seven 3-pointers in the extra period, while the Fever struggled, missing their final four shots. A key three-pointer by Betnijah Laney, assisted by Courtney Vandersloot, broke an 85-85 tie with under two minutes remaining, sealing the victory for the Liberty.

Despite the loss, Boston shone for Indiana with 23 points. Emma Cannon achieved a career-high 19 points, while Kelsey Mitchell added 16 and Grace Berger also set a personal best with 15.

The Fever were forced to adjust their starting lineup due to injuries to NaLyssa Smith (stress fracture in left foot) and Lexie Hull (broken nose), both of whom had played in their previous game. Smith is expected to be sidelined for two weeks. The Liberty now advance to face the defending champion Las Vegas Aces in the Commissioner's Cup final on August 15th.
