Joy Behar Questions Carrie Underwood's Patriotism Over Trump Inauguration Performance

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

"The View" co-host Joy Behar recently criticized country music star Carrie Underwood for her decision to sing at Donald Trump's inauguration. Behar questioned Underwood's patriotism, implying that performing for the former president was an act of "normalizing" him. She expressed confusion over how Underwood could claim to love America while supporting someone Behar believes sought to harm the nation. Behar specifically referenced Trump's legal troubles, referring to him as a "convicted felon." Although Behar stated she supports free speech and wouldn't prevent Underwood from performing, she emphasized she personally wouldn't participate in such an event.

Underwood, who sang "America the Beautiful" at the inauguration, defended her choice, stating she was "honored" to participate in the historic event. She emphasized her love for the country and the importance of unity. Her statement, as reported by the Associated Press, highlighted the need to "come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future." Underwood's representative did not respond to requests for comment on Behar's remarks.

Other co-hosts on "The View" offered differing perspectives. Alyssa Farah Griffin countered Behar's argument by pointing out that many Americans who voted for Trump also love their country. Sunny Hostin respected Underwood's artistic freedom, stating, "I think art is art, and, you know, you have a right to perform where you want to perform." Whoopi Goldberg echoed this sentiment, supporting Underwood's decision and drawing parallels to MSNBC hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski's past interactions with Trump.

Lee Greenwood and the Village People also performed at the inaugural events. The Village People, known for their song "Y.M.C.A.", which became a staple at Trump rallies, addressed potential criticism in a Facebook statement, asserting their belief that music transcends politics.
