Comedian Jim Gaffigan recently discussed his 2020 anti-Trump social media posts, expressing regret not for the content itself, but for how some Trump supporters interpreted his criticism as personal attacks. In an interview with The Daily Beast, Gaffigan clarified that his intention was never to criticize Trump supporters themselves. He recalled telling someone, "F you," after they claimed they could no longer follow him due to his political views, a reaction he now regrets.

In 2020, on X (formerly Twitter), Gaffigan posted a series of critical tweets about then-President Trump. One tweet called Trump a "traitor and a con man," while another criticized his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Gaffigan told The Daily Beast that while he stands by his posts, he acknowledges that some die-hard Trump fans who may have previously enjoyed his comedy will likely never forgive him.

Gaffigan emphasized the importance of authenticity, both as a comedian and as a parent. He admitted that expressing his political views might alienate some people, but it also attracts others. He also recounted his son jokingly commenting on one of his posts, "I liked him until he went on his Trump rant." Gaffigan stated that the loss of fans due to his political stance wasn't significant.

The comedian also addressed his performance at the Al Smith Dinner, where he made jokes about both Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. He anticipated criticism from both sides of the political spectrum and acknowledged being accused of "normalizing a fascist." Despite the backlash, Gaffigan believed his participation was worthwhile. He stated that he is not a roast comedian and generally avoids discussing politics in his routines.
