Iowa Man Killed by Deputy Was Holding a Pellet Gun

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Authorities have revealed that the man fatally shot by an Iowa deputy earlier this week was wielding a pellet gun, not a real firearm. The incident occurred in Hampton, Iowa, during a domestic dispute call on Tuesday night.

Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Davenport crime

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) identified the deceased as 30-year-old Matt Davis. Franklin County deputies responded to a domestic disturbance report and encountered Davis holding what appeared to be a handgun. Despite commands to drop the weapon, Davis reportedly advanced towards the officers and then pointed the weapon at a passing vehicle. A deputy subsequently shot Davis, who died at the scene.

Following the incident, the Iowa State Patrol and DCI launched an investigation. Their findings confirmed that Davis's weapon was a pellet gun. Body camera footage from the deputies involved captured the events, but it has not yet been made public. The investigation remains ongoing.
