I-95 Reopening Efforts Get a Boost from Pocono Raceway's Jet Dryer

Created: JANUARY 22, 2025

The ongoing efforts to reopen a crucial section of Interstate 95 in Philadelphia following a devastating collapse have received an unexpected assist from the Pocono Raceway. A truck-mounted jet dryer, typically used to maintain dry track conditions at the NASCAR venue, has been deployed to expedite the asphalt drying process.

The kerosene-fueled turbine arrived at the site of the June 11 underpass fire, which led to the closure of both directions of the vital East Coast highway. This closure has significantly disrupted traffic flow, emphasizing the urgency of the reopening efforts.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has expressed optimism about implementing a temporary solution to restore traffic flow in the near future. However, with rain predicted, the jet dryer from the NASCAR track will play a crucial role in ensuring the freshly paved asphalt is sufficiently dry for lane markings to be applied.

The innovative use of the jet dryer stemmed from a suggestion by Transportation Secretary Mike Carroll, who previously represented a district near the Pocono Raceway. Carroll reached out to his contacts at the raceway, who readily agreed to provide the equipment.

Raceway president Ben May confirmed that the state will not be charged for the use of the dryer, emphasizing its contribution to the collective effort to restore the vital transportation artery.

I-95 Collapse Aftermath

Crews are diligently working to repair the collapsed section of I-95, which resulted from a gasoline tanker truck fire. The driver tragically lost his life in the incident, and the extensive damage necessitated the demolition of the southbound lanes as well. A permanent replacement bridge will be constructed in due course.

Paving operations commenced on Wednesday and continued into Thursday. The jet dryer, capable of generating air temperatures of 1400 degrees Fahrenheit, will be instrumental in drying the new asphalt before the application of highway lines. While Governor Shapiro aims to reopen the roadway this weekend, the anticipated rain may affect the timeline.
