Following the Philadelphia Eagles' NFC Championship victory over the Washington Commanders, a driver struck three pedestrians amidst the celebratory crowds in Philadelphia on Sunday night. The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. ET near the City Center area, hours after the game concluded at Lincoln Financial Field. Philadelphia police confirmed the driver's apprehension and stated that the incident did not appear to be intentional. The injured pedestrians sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The city had anticipated large crowds of Eagles fans celebrating in the streets and had taken preemptive measures, including road closures and the greasing of light poles to deter climbing. Despite these precautions, numerous fans took to the streets, some climbing on cars, setting off fireworks, and attempting to scale the greased poles. Philadelphia’s managing director Adam Thiel had previously cautioned against climbing the poles, emphasizing the potential cost of damage.
The Eagles' decisive 55-23 victory over the Commanders was fueled by strong performances from running back Saquon Barkley and quarterback Jalen Hurts. The incident involving the driver and pedestrians marred an otherwise joyous occasion for Eagles fans.
