Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

Former NBA player Dion Waiters, the 4th overall pick in the 2012 draft, is determined to return to the league after a three-season absence. Waiters recently showcased his skills in a private workout in Las Vegas, attended by NBA scouts and executives, as reported by Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report. Waiters, now 31, last played in the NBA during the 2019-20 season, winning a championship with the Los Angeles Lakers in a short stint within the NBA bubble.

Expressing his eagerness for another opportunity, Waiters emphasized his improved maturity and commitment to the game. "I'm healthy and eager to demonstrate that I'm not the same player I was perceived to be," Waiters stated. "Many people talk about the past, but I'm focused on showing my growth. I still have the passion and the drive to compete." He further expressed confidence in his ability to contribute both on the court and as a veteran presence in the locker room.

Waiters' NBA career, spanning 10 years, has seen both highs and lows, averaging 13.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 2.8 assists. After being drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers, he played for the Oklahoma City Thunder, Miami Heat, and the Lakers. His time with the Heat in 2019-20 was marked by multiple suspensions, ultimately leading to a trade to the Memphis Grizzlies, who subsequently waived him. He then signed with the Lakers.

Reflecting on his departure from Miami, Waiters admitted to his past immaturity and irresponsibility. "I let the Heat down. They treated me well, but I didn't handle the situation properly," he acknowledged. "The issues were preventable if I had simply remained silent and allowed my agent to manage things. If I had done that, I'd likely still be playing there. But everything happens for a reason. I've examined my mistakes, and now I'm moving forward."

Waiters also candidly discussed his struggles with anxiety and depression during his first year away from basketball, revealing his worries about the future. While the path back to the NBA is undoubtedly challenging, Waiters believes he can still contribute to a team seeking a veteran guard with leadership qualities.
