Daughter of 'Pom-Pom Mom' Breaks Silence on Cheerleading Murder Plot, Journey to Healing

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

In 1991, the nation was captivated by the story of Wanda Holloway, the "Pom-Pom Mom" who plotted to murder the mother of her daughter's cheerleading rival. Now, Wanda's daughter, Shanna, is sharing her perspective on the infamous case and her challenging path to healing in a new documentary on Investigation Discovery (ID), "The Texas Cheerleading Murder Plot."

Shanna, a Texas teacher and mother of two, describes the deep emotional scars left by the highly publicized trial. She vividly recalls experiencing anxiety attacks triggered by school pep rallies and even the word "pom-pom." The intense scrutiny and unspoken trauma haunted her for decades.

Shanna's childhood was marked by a close bond with her mother, Wanda, a devoted figure in their community. While Shanna's interest in cheerleading waned, Wanda reportedly encouraged her to persist in the highly competitive environment.

According to reports, Wanda's scheme involved hiring a hitman to eliminate Verna Heath, the mother of Shanna's rival, Amber. Investigators believed Wanda hoped Amber's grief would prevent her from competing, securing Shanna a spot on the squad.

Wanda's former brother-in-law, Terry Harper, alerted authorities and cooperated in gathering evidence against her. The defense later argued that Wanda's ex-husband, Tony Harper, had conspired with his brother to frame her.

Wanda's initial conviction was overturned, but she ultimately served time in prison. Shanna, burdened by the aftermath, struggled with suicidal thoughts and severe anxiety. She eventually sought counseling and began a journey of healing, culminating in the launch of her website, Smile More Worry Less, which offers support to others facing similar struggles.

Shanna's decision to participate in the documentary met with resistance from family members, but she remained determined to share her story and help others. While she acknowledges her healing is ongoing, Shanna feels a significant weight has been lifted. She hopes that by revisiting her past, others will find the courage to confront their own traumas and seek support.
