One hundred-year-old retired U.S. Army Colonel William "Bill" A. Connelly was honored with a moving flag retreat ceremony at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom on January 10, 2025. The ceremony, attended by Connelly's family, was particularly poignant as the flag, lowered from half-staff in remembrance of former President Jimmy Carter, was presented to the esteemed veteran. Connelly, a picture of pride, saluted the flag before receiving it.
Connelly's recognition extended beyond the official ceremony. Disney cast members formed a line to shake his hand, and, in a spontaneous display of gratitude, park visitors followed suit, thanking him for his service. Connelly, clearly touched, expressed feeling "great" after the event. A Disney enthusiast, he has visited the parks and enjoyed a Disney cruise with his family. His connection to Disney is further strengthened by his son-in-law, who is a cast member.
When asked about the secret to his longevity, Connelly credited "having happy people around you." Originally from King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, Connelly's military journey began at 18 when he was drafted into the Army. His service record includes fighting at Omaha Beach on D-Day as part of the 115th Regiment of the 29th Infantry Division, according to family-provided biographical information.
Connelly's dedication to education is also remarkable. The Army facilitated his high school completion and college attendance, where he participated in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps. After earning his bachelor of arts degree, he rejoined the Army as an officer. His 27-year military career spanned both the European and Pacific theaters of World War II, culminating in the award of a Bronze Star for Meritorious Service in a Combat Zone.
Connelly dedicated a significant portion of his military service to the Counterintelligence Corps. He is a father of three, a grandfather of six, and a great-grandfather of six. He celebrated his 100th birthday the day after the ceremony. Connelly's wife, Jean, passed away in 2016 after 63 years of marriage.
In an interview with Fox News Digital, Connelly's humor and humility were evident. He downplayed his military contributions, describing them as "nothing special." The flag retreat ceremony, a tradition in Magic Kingdom's Town Square since the park's opening in 1971, includes the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of "God Bless America" and "The Star-Spangled Banner."
Disney World's website describes the ceremony as "a tribute—a thank you to veterans for their service, sacrifice and dedication to protecting our country."
