American Airlines, JetBlue Granted Extension to Unwind Northeast Alliance

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

A federal judge has granted American Airlines and JetBlue Airways additional time to dissolve their Northeast Alliance, following a ruling last month that ordered the partnership's termination. Judge Leo Sorokin in Boston clarified that the injunction will take effect 21 days after the issuance of a final judgment outlining the terms for the airlines, the exact date of which remains undetermined.

The airlines had originally faced a deadline just 30 days after the May 19th decision, which sided with the U.S. Justice Department's lawsuit to dismantle the alliance. In a subsequent filing, American and JetBlue requested to retain certain aspects of the partnership, specifically code-sharing and reciprocal frequent-flyer benefits. The Justice Department opposed this request, though acknowledged that existing tickets sold through the partnership should be honored to minimize passenger disruption. American Airlines CEO Robert Isom has stated the airline's intent to appeal the ruling, while JetBlue's position on an appeal remains unclear.
