The Untold Story of the Six Triple Eight: Honoring the Legacy of WWII's Black Female Battalion

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

The recently released Netflix film "The Six Triple Eight," starring Kerry Washington and directed by Tyler Perry, sheds light on a remarkable yet largely unknown chapter of World War II history: the story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the first predominantly Black and female army battalion to serve overseas.

Deployed to England and France, these women faced the daunting task of clearing years of backlogged mail, a mission critical to boosting soldier morale. As Kerry Washington, portraying Major Charity Adams, emphasizes in the film, "When there is no mail, there is low morale," a phrase that served as the battalion's motto. Adams, who led approximately 850 women, ultimately became the highest-ranking Black woman in the war, achieving the rank of lieutenant colonel.

The sheer volume of mail—over 3.3 billion pieces in 1945 alone—created a logistical nightmare that threatened to undermine troop morale. The 6888th was the Army's answer to this crisis, tackling a mountain of 17 million pieces of backlogged mail. Their efficiency was astounding, processing an estimated 65,000 pieces per eight-hour shift.

Producer Nicole Avant underscores the women's unwavering dedication and patriotism, stating, "They were determined, committed, and focused. They weren't going to let anything stand in their way. At that time, the U.S. Postal Service was the only form of communication." Avant, who boasts a diverse background in politics and entertainment, including work on President Obama's campaign and a stint as U.S. Ambassador to the Bahamas, felt a deep personal connection to the project, especially as her father, Clarence Avant, the renowned "Black Godfather" of Motown Records, saw the film shortly before his passing.

The film's impact extended beyond the screen, reaching a member of the 6888th herself. Retired Corporal Lena Derriecott Bell King, portrayed by Ebony Obsidian in the film, was able to view "The Six Triple Eight" with Tyler Perry and the cast before her passing in January. The movie also features Oprah Winfrey as Mary McLeod Bethune and Susan Sarandon as Eleanor Roosevelt, adding to the powerful ensemble cast dedicated to bringing this forgotten story to light.

Avant emphasizes the collective effort to honor these unsung heroes: "Everyone wanted to tell this story about these American heroes who significantly impacted the course of World War II. Everyone was committed and focused on sharing this story of these remarkable patriots."
