Nevada Governor's Ethics Hearing Postponed Amidst Uniform Controversy

Created: JANUARY 20, 2025

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo's ethics hearing, originally slated for this week, has been pushed back to July 25th. The hearing pertains to allegations that Lombardo improperly used his sheriff's uniform and badge in campaign materials during his successful 2022 gubernatorial run. The Nevada Commission on Ethics is considering a substantial penalty of nearly $1.7 million and potential censure.

Lombardo, who served two terms as Clark County Sheriff before assuming the governorship in January, is accused of leveraging his law enforcement position for political gain. The Commission alleges 68 violations of state ethics laws, specifically citing the use of four images featuring Lombardo in uniform across various social media platforms during his campaign. They are also recommending the assignment of an ethics compliance liaison to the Governor's office to ensure future adherence to regulations.

Lombardo's legal team has challenged the proposed sanctions, characterizing them as excessive and unprecedented, given the limited number of images in question. The postponement of the hearing reportedly stems from scheduling conflicts for two commission members who were unable to attend the originally scheduled date. The July 25th hearing will provide a platform for the eight-member commission to deliberate the recommended penalties before issuing a final decision.
