The New York Jets have formally announced their decision to move on from quarterback Aaron Rodgers. A statement released on Thursday confirmed the team's intention to head in a different direction at the quarterback position.
Head Coach Aaron Glenn and General Manager Darren Mougey explained that they had met with Rodgers the previous week to inform him of their plans. They emphasized the importance of open communication to allow both parties ample time to prepare for the future. The statement expressed gratitude for Rodgers' leadership, passion, and commitment to the Jets organization, wishing him well in his future endeavors.
Rodgers' two-season stint with the Jets was marked by adversity. A torn Achilles tendon just four plays into his debut season sidelined him for the remainder of 2023. Upon his return in 2024, the Jets struggled to a 5-12 record, leading to the dismissal of both Head Coach Robert Saleh and General Manager Joe Douglas mid-season. Despite the challenges, Rodgers managed to throw for 3,987 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions in 17 games during the 2024 season.
Jets owner Woody Johnson also expressed his appreciation for Rodgers' time with the team, acknowledging the initial excitement surrounding his arrival in 2023. Johnson highlighted Rodgers' embodiment of the Jets spirit, his connection with the fans, and his engagement with the city. He extended a welcoming invitation for Rodgers to return in the future and wished him success in his next chapter.
