A family of six has embraced a unique lifestyle change, converting a vintage double-decker bus into their primary residence and enjoying significant financial savings in the process.

Conrad Kirk, a 31-year-old entrepreneur and father of four, initially viewed the idea of bus-living as a whimsical notion. However, what began as a playful thought transformed into a practical solution for Conrad, his wife Nicole, and their four daughters.

Previously residing in a three-bedroom rental in South Yorkshire, England, the Kirks purchased the 1978 Rod-Bodied Daimler Fleetline bus in September 2021, initially intending it for holiday getaways. The bus, acquired for just over $2,000, has become much more than a vacation vehicle – it's now their full-time home, allowing them to save approximately $1,000 per month.

After investing around $8,000 in renovations, the bus boasts a functional bathroom, a comfortable living area, a well-equipped kitchen, and an open-plan bedroom featuring a double bed and two bunk beds. Conrad emphasized their resourceful approach to renovations, prioritizing recycled materials and repurposing existing items to minimize expenses.

The Kirk children, Luna, Poppy, Summer, and Phoebe, all under the age of eight, have enthusiastically embraced the bus-living experience. While they attend traditional schooling during the day, they relish the unique opportunity to learn practical skills like woodworking and measuring, actively participating in the bus's transformation. Their free time is often spent outdoors, engaging in activities such as paddleboarding and rock climbing – experiences made possible by their mobile lifestyle.

Conrad shared that the family's unconventional living arrangement has not only fostered valuable life skills and created opportunities for shared adventures but also allows them to save significantly. Their goal is to save enough money in the coming years to purchase land and build a traditional family home.
